Henry John Joseph Hodges (1830 - 1899)

Born 1830, Bermondsey, Surrey. Son of Edward HODGES (1805 – 1878) and Elizabeth Rachel REYNOLDS (1806 – 1883). Christened 20 Jun 1830, St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey.  Elder brother of EC Hodges and father of gunmakers Ernest and Arthur. Married Elizabeth JENNINGS 3 Feb 1856, Bermondsey, Surrey.  Died June quarter 1899, Islington, North London.

1851 living at 43 Union Rd Camberwell,  listed as 'gunmaker'.

3/2/1856 married Elizabeth JENNINGS (1837?- ) born St Martins, Westminster, daughter of Joseph JENNINGS (born c.1800) and Mary  (born c.1799). Living in Blue Anchor rd Bermondsey, at time of marriage.

1856 Birth of first child Clara Elizabeth HODGES (1856- ). Dec. qtr Bermondsey. Surrey. Later became domestic servant and cook.

7 March 1859 birth of second child, Edith Emma HODGES (1859-1932), St Clement Danes, Strand, Middlesex, who later married Walter Herbert NEESHAM (born Islington  1856) on 20 Aug 1882, Bethnal Green. Died 1932, Islington, North London.

24th May 1861 birth of third child Ernest Henry HODGES (1861-1891) gunmaker - see his own page.

1861 census living at 3 Upper Bride St, Islington/St James (sometimes listed as 'Hadges') a gunlock maker.

1864 birth of fourth child Agnes Mary HODGES, Islington, Middlesex. Later became a domestic servant.

10th August 1870 birth of fifth child Augustus Henry HODGES, Islington, Middlesex. Later married Maria WINNETT on 25 Jan 1896 at Walthamstow, Essex. Children: Olive and Frank.

1871 living at 73 Bride St, Islington/St Clement.

1881 census Henry John Joseph is listed as 'Harry', living at 5 Ebenezer Buildings, Islington.

1891 living 23 Legard Rd, Islington. Occupation: Gun action maker.

Died June qtr. 1899 1b 213 Islington.
